Why should we remove the popcorn ceiling?

If having a popcorn ceiling is so advantageous, then why should you remove it? Well, to answer your question, when the time passed, and the truth emerged. There were quite a few reasons to remove the textured ceiling:

  1. To remove the threat of asbestos
  2. To stop catching it dust
  3. To create better lighting
  4. To stop the popcorn ceiling from disintegrating
  5. To stop the discoloration
  6. To fix the damaged ceiling
  7. To make your room feel more modern

1. To remove the threat of asbestos

They contained asbestos. It is a mineral rock that was used in spray painting the popcorn texture on your ceiling. If this mineral is inhaled, then it can cause diseases like lung cancer and asbestosis. But if your popcorn ceiling is not damaged, then according to the expert, it should be left undisturbed because you cannot inhale the asbestos from the intact popcorn ceiling. If the ceiling is not entire, then you should get it tested and check if it contains asbestos or not. The asbestos was used in popcorn ceilings until 1990, but when the Environment Protection Agency found out about its side effect, this was banned. If your house is built before 1990, then it will probably contain asbestos.

You cannot tell if your popcorn ceiling is made up of asbestos or not just by looking at it. If you have any doubts that your top might contain asbestos, then you should not try to remove it on your own. Ask a trained and accredited asbestos professional to come and test your top for you. They are trained to take samples safely. If you try to take samples on your own and fibers of asbestos are released, it could do more damage than good. Moreover, if the sampling is not done correctly, it can be more hazardous. If you have an intact popcorn ceiling in your house, it should not be tested and left alone. Even you should not remodel the place that has a popcorn ceiling. If you want to level the popcorn ceiling, then the best thing you could do is cover it with tiles.

2. To stop catching it dust

Popcorn ceilings are magnets for environmental dust. Inhaling asbestos dust is what can lead to serious diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. There are several ways to remove this dust, but the best way is to remove the popcorn ceiling.

3. To create better lighting

The popcorn ceiling not only acts as a dirt and dust magnet, but it also causes darkness in the room. The light reflects off the bumpy and textured surface of the popcorn ceiling and causes darkness. If you want a relaxed atmosphere in your room, it is better to remove the popcorn ceiling. Removing the popcorn ceiling can cost you a lot. If you are planning to do this job on your own, even then, it will cost you around $300 for all equipment. And if you are planning to hire a professional for popcorn ceiling removal, it will cost you about $1500. It is only if your ceiling does not contain asbestos in it.

But if your roof has been tested positive for asbestos, then the removal cost will be higher. So, if you do not have that kind of budget, you can cover up your ceiling with tiles and panels. There are many types of panels available on the internet. And you can get them for cheap. The faux tin panel will cost you $3 per square foot of your ceiling. You can also use the right type of lighting for your room. Rather than using a recessed kind of illumination, use table or floor lamps. They create soft lighting in your room, which is more relaxing.

4. To stop the popcorn ceiling from disintegrating

Like any renovation in your house, the popcorn ceiling eventually fades away. It does not matter how hard you try to maintain it. After some time, it will start to disintegrate. However, the disintegration of the popcorn ceiling is not at all sophisticated. The pieces of it will fall on the floor or your furniture. These dots of popcorn ceiling will cause marks and damage your furniture. It is better to get rid of it from the start. Or the worst can happen if your popcorn ceiling contains asbestos as this dust will cause you cancer. So, it is better to leave the room and get it fixed immediately.

5. To stop the discoloration

The popcorn ceiling gets discolored over time. No matter how hard you try to save it. If your roof has lost its color, then the whole room will lose its appeal. No matter how hard you try to make it, it looks better, but the ceiling will still look dingy. If your popcorn ceiling is intact and you don’t have the budget for either replacement or removal, then you can spruce it up with a fresh coat of paint. It will quickly help you to get rid of the dinginess, and your room will look fresher. But if you can afford the removal or replacement of your ceiling, it is better to get done with this.

6. To fix the damaged ceiling

It does not matter how careful you are. Sometimes, an accident happens, and you end up with a damaged roof. So, the only option left to fix the damaged roof is by removing the popcorn ceiling. The popcorn ceiling problem is that you cannot patch up the only area where damage is done. You have to redo the whole ceiling for it. No matter if you have punched a small hole in one place, or there is a scrape, mark, or spot, or one-part is scraping. So, if you want to save yourself from further trouble, then instead of redoing the popcorn ceiling, remove it once and for all. It will be a one-time thing.

7. To make your room feel more modern

When you are adding your house for sale or renovating it to provide you a more modern design, it might come to you as a shocker that the popcorn ceiling has gone out of style long ago. No matter what you do to renovate the room or your house, it will still look dated and dingy because of the popcorn ceiling. Your expensive amnesties will not do anything for it. So, if your style is getting cramped up because of the popcorn ceiling, then it is better to remove it entirely with something more modern or sleek. Nowadays, the ceiling tiles are considered much more popular and in demand. They are not that expensive either. To add a spark and style to your house, add tiles on top of your popcorn ceiling.
